The WHO has warned that the new Covid variant, Omicron, has a high risk of infection surges. “Omicron has an unprecedented number of spike mutations, some of which are concerning for their potential impact on the trajectory of the pandemic.”
The head of the organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said scientists are studying the transmission rates of the new variant and how it reacts with the vaccines. “Omicron’s very emergence is another reminder that although many of us think we are done with Covid-19, it is not done with us.”
While there have not been any deaths attributed to the Omicron variant, it is forcing countries to shut their borders for now. The EU, UK, and US have all issued a travel ban to South Africa, where the variant was reported earlier this month. US health officials are now recommending getting the vaccine booster and wearing masks indoors again.
