Some European Nations to Consider Treating Covid Like the Flu

People in Spain have lately been calling for Covid-19 to be considered an endemic disease similar to the flu, suggesting people just live with it. British Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said the UK is, “on a path towards transitioning from pandemic to endemic.”  The lower hospitalization rates and death rates of the Omicron variant are what generally prompted the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanches to propose the prospect of Europe moving beyond restrictions.

Sanchez said, “We have to evaluate the evolution of Covid from pandemic to an endemic illness.  France, Germany, Italy however, are now all recording the highest daily average of the entire pandemic. The World Health Organization said that going at the current pace, “More than half of the people in Europe are on track to contract the omicron variant in the next two months.”

France and Germany are tightening restrictions on the unvaccinated, and the French President Emmanuel Macron has said he “wants to make life for the unvaccinated as difficult as possible”. France is looking at putting a vaccine pass program in place in order to get into bars and restaurants, and even be able to travel on trains.

The Netherlands is still strictly maintaining lockdowns with bars and restaurants closed, and in Italy, the Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government has vaccine mandates for anyone over 50 years of age.  Draghi said, “Most of the problems we have today stem from the fact that there are people who are not vaccinated.”

Prime Minister Micheal Martin of Ireland says that while Ireland has some of the highest Covid positivity rates in all of Europe, they will continue maintaining their voluntary vaccination program.  Belgium is in a similar line of thinking as the Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said, “The Belgian government wants to give people a free choice.”

Even though these rates are higher than ever, many countries are shortening their quarantine lengths. The Czech Republic is now requiring Covid-positive people to isolate for only five days rather than the two weeks they had required before.

The Spanish government is working on new monitoring techniques of Covid positive people, and the Health Minister Carolina Darias has shared this initiative with other European countries. This decision comes on the heels of Spain reporting almost 692,000 new cases in only the last week and 13.4% of hospital beds used for Covid patients
