The state of California has now confirmed the first known case of the Omicron variant in the United States. The CDC announced on Wednesday, December 1 that the the infected individual had recently returned from a trip to South Africa. They also shared that the infected person was fully vaccinated and has displayed only mild symptoms so far, and are currently isolating,
The US is now planning to implement even more strict travel requirements now. President Biden is expected to announce the new measures which will include international passengers to provide a negative covid test result from within 24 hours of their departure. Biden also said that he does not expect the new variant to cause more lockdowns.
Health experts believe the new travel restrictions will allow them more time to research the variant and determine their impact on the efficacy of the vaccines. The WHO is now reporting that 23 different countries have reported Omicron present.
CDC director Rochelle Walensky said,” Omicron’s emergence further emphasises the importance of vaccination, boosters and prevention efforts needed to protect against Covid-19″.
