Omega 3 To Help with Your Immune System

Fish oil rich in DHA and EPA is widely believed to help prevent disease by reducing inflammation.  This we know.  It is well documented to help with heart health by lowering blood pressure, slowing the development of plaque in the arteries, and can help reduce triglycerides (type of fat (lipid) found in your blood).  What many people might not know however, is that these Omega 3 fatty acids can also help with your immune system.

“A new report appearing in the April 2013 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, helps provide clarity on this by showing that DHA-rich fish oil enhances B cell activity, a white blood cell, challenging the notion that fish oil is only immunosuppressive.”

B cells are a type of white blood cell of the lymphocyte subtype. Meaning they function in our immune system by secreting antibodies – an antibody being a protein used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign bacteria and viruses.

Let’s get a little more scientific here.  The most abundant type of white blood cell in humans is what’s called a Neutrophil.  Neutrophils are the first white blood cell to rush to the site of inflammation and they have crucial role in getting rid of pathogens.  In studies it has been shown that Omega 3 fatty acids help these neutrophils improve their phagocytic capacity. Phagocytes are cells that protect the body by ingesting harmful foreign particles.  Here are some numbers – adding DHA to neutrophils leads to a 35% increase in phagocytic capacity. That’s a lot of big words and talk – but to break it down into English – DHA has been seen in studies to help boost white blood cells capacity to fight off viruses and bacteria, boosting the immune system.

Now we know that Omega 3 fatty acids could be good for both our heart health and our immune system, it’s still important to remember the number one rule of adding supplements to our diets – everything in moderation and always seeking medical advice from your doctor before taking anything.

Many people don’t get enough EPA and DHA in their diet from their diet alone, so taking a supplement is good in moderation, but there is such a thing as too much.  An amount of 400-700 EPA and DHA is recommended for healthy adults, however sometimes higher amounts are advised for certain health conditions.  People concerned with heart health, and now with new research, immune system health, a visit to your doctor could lead to higher dosage recommendations. “The American Heart Association, among other organizations, recommends that people with coronary heart disease take 1,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA daily, while those with high triglycerides take 2,000–4,000 mg daily”

ABN Omega 3s have a combined amount 700 mg of EPA and DHA per pill, providing for a high-quality product and are in line with the daily recommended amount for healthy adults.  If you are thinking about taking supplementation to help with heart and immune system health, ABN Omega 3s could be the perfect addition to your current diet.  With everything going on now in the world regarding the current Covid-19 pandemic, anything that might be able to help us improve and build our immune systems could be very useful!
