New Antibody Developed Neutralizes Covid-19 in Testing

For this blog post we’ll be looking at Covid-19, but not necessarily an experimental drug this time.  It was announced today that scientists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands were able to create an antibody that is able to “defeat” the coronavirus.  It is an early but promising step taken to identify treatments for this virus.  The antibody has been able to neutralize the virus in cell cultures, so this is before human or animal trials.  It is known as 47D11 and it targets the spike proteins that allow the virus enter human cells.  In the experiment, it not only defeated Covid-19, but also another virus with a similar spike protein that causes SARS.

The antibody is a Monoclonal antibody, meaning they are lab-created and resemble versions that occur naturally in the body which fight of bacteria.  These antibodies have been recognized as a class of drug that are promising against diseases and have even shown to work against other viruses.

47D11 was observed to prevent the Covid-19 virus from infecting living cells. The cells were from mice, and it showed that the antibody binds to the spike protein we mentioned earlier, effectively neutralizing it.  Researches say that if the antibody could be further tested, injections into humans could protect uninfected people, significantly slowing the spread of the virus. The next steps are animal testing.  Dr Penny Ward, Visiting Professor in Pharmaceutical Medicine at Kings College London, said “This potential would be greatly enhanced if antiviral effect was observed in an animal model.”
