The vaccine for covid-19 created by Moderna was approved by the FDA for emergency use. The United States has agreed to purchase 200 million doses of the vaccine, and six million doses are ready to ship now. This is coming on the heels of a record setting day of over 250,000 positive cases for the virus.
FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn said of the EUA on Friday, “Today marks another crucial step in the fight against this global pandemic that is causing vast numbers of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States each day.”
President-elect Joe Biden said of the vaccine approvals, “this assures us that brighter days lie ahead. But the fight against Covid-19 is not yet over.” He continued, “We know the immense challenges ahead, including scaling up manufacturing, distribution, and the monumental task of vaccinating hundreds of millions of Americans. We need to make sure we have the resources to do all of this and to do it quickly.”
Government officials are aiming for 100 million vaccinations by April of 2021. The CDC guidelines say frontline healthcare workers should be prioritized first. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top most infectious disease expert said, “All Americans will protect themselves by getting vaccinated when the vaccine becomes available to them. That is how our country will begin to heal and move forward”
